Tortuguero National Park was created to protect the largest nesting population of green turtles in the Atlantic, seeking to reduce poaching of eggs and adults. The Turtle Love project, since 2018, has had the mission of preserving sea turtles through local community involvement, applied research and contact with environmental agencies, executing a community conservation project that protects nesting along 5 km of Playa Tres.

Since its inception, Turtle Love has had significant environmental impacts through a multinational team with diverse professional backgrounds. Check out some of the data collected since 2018 below:

Poaching reduced by over 70% | Over 3,000 nests protected | Over 300,000 chicks saved

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Those who identify the needs are those who feel them. Karibu, in partnership with community leaders, identifies the needs that need to be addressed and the best ways to implement them. It is important to know that it is not necessary to have any specific knowledge to take this trip, as Karibu will previously train the group in carrying out the activities developed. The most important thing is to be proactive in learning, teaching and acquiring new skills.

Check out some of the activities that will be proposed below:

Night patrols with researchers to collect data on sea turtle nesting and help maintain a beach presence that deters poaching.

Morning censuses to count tracks and nests, check status and inventory hatched nests to determine incubation success.

Beach cleanups , community outreach events, and environ-mental education activities for children at a local school.

SCHEDULE

Get ready for days full of excitement! The schedule may be subject to change depending on weather conditions, but all social and cultural immersion activities will take place during the expedition.

July 13th

Group meeting in San José, from where you will depart together for Playa Tres. Please note: the flight arrival time in San José is 8am, so that the group can meet up there. We recommend that, if possible, you plan your arrival the day before (July 12th), as we can recommend good hotels for you to spend the night.

The group will be staying at Pousada Lapa Verde, which is very close to where the social activities will take place.

The rooms will be shared by the group, as will the bathrooms and common dining areas. There is no hot water in the showers, but the shower is usually very refreshing after a day's work. The rooms have single beds and ceiling fans.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will always be served at the inn. Since the region is somewhat isolated from the rest of the surrounding area, there is not a great variety of food; however, you can expect the following items for lunch and dinner: rice, beans, salad and 1 type of protein (egg, chicken, fish or pork). If you have dietary restrictions, just let us know and we will adapt as best we can.

SDG and coordination

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global agenda adopted by the UN in 2015, consisting of 17 goals and 169 targets to be achieved by 2030. Global actions are planned, divided into institutional, social, environmental and economic spheres. The project developed with the Turtle Love organization is based on the SDG LIFE BELOWWATER , aiming to promote the conservation of marine life and the sustainable use of the oceans.

Aiming for excellence in the activities that will be carried out, the trip will have a coordinator responsible for guiding the mission and able to assist the group in whatever is necessary. Learn a little more about him:

FAQ

1. What will this experience bring to me?
Cultural immersion, teamwork, volunteer experience, contact with another way of living, social planning and the volunteer work certificate.

2. Will not speaking Spanish be an impediment?
Spanish will not be a problem in any way, as the coordinator will be able to translate everything that is communicated and assist with the project, at the airport or in tourist activities.

3. Will I be able to take photos promoting the project and my action?
Yes, valuing the dignity of those involved and respecting the moments to do so. An experience like this deserves to be shared!

4. Is it risky in terms of security?
No. The coordinator will be with the group at all times and is aware of the details necessary for safety.

5. What are the working hours? Will there be time for tourism?
The schedule of activities will vary and may be subject to change. However, there will certainly be enough time to rest and visit the village. If you are interested, Karibu can help with tourist recommendations.

6. What are the accommodation conditions?
Accommodation is simple, with shared rooms and bathrooms. It is not necessary to bring bed linen and towels. Meals will be prepared and served with the help of the group. There is not much variety on the menu, so we suggest that participants bring supplements such as cookies, snacks and fruit, if necessary.

7. Are there any requirements for registration?
The only requirement is to be of legal age or, if you are under 18, to go with a guardian. After paying the first installment, we will guide you through pre-boarding details such as passport, international vaccination certificate and travel insurance. You won't need to worry about a thing!

For more details, just send us a WhatsApp message so we can schedule a call to answer any questions you may have. We are at your disposal!
