protect sea turtles from extinction in costa rica

Make a difference in preserving marine life and working towards environmental awareness. Allow yourself this connection with nature alongside a project engaged in co-creating a better world.

the social project

The Tortuguero National Park was created in 1970 to protect the largest nesting population of green turtles in the Atlantic, seeking to reduce poaching of eggs and adult species. The Turtle Love project, since 2018, has had the mission of preserving turtles through the involvement of the local population, applied research and contact with environmental agencies, executing a community conservation project that protects nesting sites along 5 km of Playa Tres.

Turtle Love, since its inception, has had significant environmental impacts through a multinational team with diverse professional experiences. Check out some of the data collected since 2018 below:

Poaching reduced by more than 70%  |  More than 3,000 protected nests  |  More than 300 thousand puppies saved

activities

Those who identify needs are those who feel them. Karibu, in partnership with Turtle Love, identifies the needs to be addressed and the best ways to execute them. No specific knowledge is required to carry out the trip, as Karibu will provide online training to carry out the activities. The most important thing is to be proactive in learning and acquiring new skills.

Check out some of the activities that will be proposed below:

  • Night patrols with researchers to collect data on sea turtle nesting and help maintain a beach presence that deters poaching.

  • Morning censuses to count tracks and nests, check status, and inventory hatched nests to determine hatching success.

  • Beach cleaning, community outreach events and environmental education activities for children at a local school.

Important: participants must be physically fit to travel long distances during patrols and on the trails, aware that they may encounter animals along the way.

schedule

In this individual type of travel, you are the one who organizes the schedule and according to your pace. We will send you a suggestion of daily activities and our local team will provide support to make your days very special.

You can stay as many days as you wish in the project (from 6 nights), considering on the first and last day the transfer between San José and Playa Tres. This trip will be done by car between San Jose and Caño Blanco (3 hours long) and then you will take a boat to Playa Tres (10 minutes trip).

accommodation & meals

Accommodation: you will stay at Pousada Lapa Verde, which is very close to where the social activities take place. The bedroom and bathroom are private, and the common dining area is shared. There is no hot water in the shower, but the shower is usually very refreshing after a day of work.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner will always be served at the inn. Due to the region being somewhat isolated from the surrounding area, there is not a great diversity of foods; however, you can expect the following items for lunch and dinner: rice, beans, salad and 1 type of protein (egg, chicken, fish or pork). If you have dietary restrictions or intolerances, don't worry, we will adapt according to possibilities.
