Be the change in the lives of children and students in Kenya

Promote the education and well-being of children and young people at two schools and a children's home in the coastal town of Watamu.

social projects

The social work is based on three organizations, located in Watamu: a children's home and two schools in the region, with which we have been partners for over 4 years.

The home is called God Our Father (GOF). Currently, it welcomes 67 children from 0 to 21 years old, being a loving place, with daily meals and providing quality study in schools in the region. The founders, Samuel and Sussy, work hard with staff to provide the best for children in terms of health, education and quality of life. However, as it is a non-governmental organization, it survives on donations and sponsorship.

The schools are primary, Showers of Blessings, and secondary, Westy Gateh, both serving more than 400 students. Even though the teachers are dedicated, resources are scarce, so the work of volunteers is important to complement basic teaching knowledge.

activities

Volunteers can work on different fronts, depending on their skills and interests. No specific knowledge is necessary, as Karibu will provide prior training in the execution of the activities developed. The most important thing is proactivity to learn, teach and acquire new experiences. Suggestions for activities to be carried out:

COMPUTING CLASSES

Help children and young people develop their computer knowledge so that they acquire this important skill for the job market and global connection. Give classes on Internet access, mastery of software such as Excel, Word and Power Point, talk about the dangers of fake news, among other topics.

CONVERSATION ROUNDS ABOUT SEXUALITY, CAREER AND ADDICTIONS

Menstruation and sexuality are major taboos in Kenya. Little is said about these issues, resulting in unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and sexual abuse. Debate with young people about this topic and help them with their doubts.

One of the most important activities to be carried out is to encourage a promising future for young people and address the relevance of studies in professional training. Talk about the job market, the range of professions that exist, the challenges, opportunities and how each person can build a dignified future.

Addictions such as the use of drugs and alcoholic beverages are a reality in this region of the country. Explaining the harm, practicing active listening and approaching the topic with empathy is a task of inestimable importance.

SUSTAINABILITY AND PERSONAL HYGIENE WORKSHOPS

Kenya is a country with several green initiatives, talking about this subject to further promote sustainable practices is one of the activities we recommend. As well as talking about the relevance of personal hygiene in maintaining health, through daily practices.

MAINTENANCE OF SPACES:

Planting trees, painting spaces, tidying common areas and cleaning are necessary for organizations to remain firm and strong. Make a difference!

schedule

In this individual type of travel, you are the one who organizes the schedule and according to your pace. We will send you a suggestion of daily activities and our local team will provide support to make your days very special.

You can stay as many days as you wish in the project (from 6 nights), considering on the first and last day the journey between the cities of Mombasa and Watamu, 2 hours away by car. This transfer will be done by private car, in which our partner will pick you up wherever you are in Mombasa and take you safely to Watamu.

In addition to social activities, you can also include cultural immersion activities in your schedule to understand more about the nuances of the country and discover the charms of Watamu. Our suggestions include:

  • Boat trip through the Watamu mangrove.

  • Discover 3 beautiful beaches in the region, called Safina, Fortamu and Watamu Beach.

  • Have lunch and a chat with Mr. Johnson and Mama Victoria, special people who have a lot to share about life.

  • Visit the Marafa Canyon and watch the sunset at the Lichthaus restaurant.
