make a difference in nepal by contributing to education without prejudice and violence

Support an incredible social project that has been transforming the lives of children and young people in rural areas of Nepal through education.

social project

Nepal is one of the countries with the lowest HDI in the world, in which 30% of the population lives in poverty and struggles to access education, which presents numerous challenges, such as poor quality of teaching, the use of violence in the classroom, geographic remoteness and discrimination based on gender, caste and disabilities.

Private education is expensive and public education is not free, which leads to many children and young people not attending school and becoming illiterate. This problem becomes even worse for children belonging to the Dalit group, in which discrimination is even greater. Faced with this scenario, Shamser Thapa appears, a teacher committed to changing this reality.

Not satisfied with the educational system, Shamser created four free private schools in rural areas of the country that do not discriminate against any type of caste. This initiative alleviates the burden on families with less financial means, enabling students to receive quality education without violence in the classroom.

New Marigold Academy is the latest school run by Shamser, located in Chiti Municipality. Currently, it has more than 200 students from preschool to elementary school II and is a reference in the region for its quality and the principles applied.

activities

Those who identify needs are those who feel them. Karibu, in partnership with Shamser Thapa, identifies the opportunities to be worked on and the best ways to execute them. No specific knowledge is required to carry out the trip, as Karibu will provide online training to carry out the activities. The most important thing is to be proactive in learning and acquiring new skills.

Check out some of the proposed activities below:

EDUCATIONAL REINFORCEMENT

Art workshops, reading, sports, tutoring, help for teachers with daily classes and support for children who have difficulties in a subject.

SPACE MAINTENANCE

Painting classrooms, organizing spaces, helping with the maintenance of leisure areas and renovations that are necessary for the school.

SUSTAINABILITY AND FUTURE

Workshops on how to contribute to a healthier environment and the importance of education in building a successful future in accordance with each person's dreams.

schedule

In this individual type of travel, you are the one who organizes the schedule and according to your pace. We will send you a suggestion of daily activities and our local team will provide support to make your days very special.

You can stay as many days as you wish in the project (from 6 nights), considering on the first and last day the commute between Kathmandu and Chiti (the city where the school is located). This journey is made by local bus and takes around 7 hours, with a snack stop on the road. We provide all the details of this transfer in advance, you won't need to worry about anything.

accommodation & logistics

You will be accommodated at the New Marigold school. On the second floor of the classrooms, Shamser has reserved some rooms where volunteers can sleep on simple beds with mosquito nets over them. The bathroom is also simple and shared. Proactivity is expected in keeping the bed made, dishes washed and respecting quiet hours after 10 pm.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the school itself. Following local tradition, all meals are based on Dal Bath, which is the country's typical dish consisting of rice with lentil soup and some vegetables. There are a lot of volunteers from all over the world on the project who generally agree to buy something different to eat and cook together. If you want, you can also buy food in the surrounding markets or eat in the local cafes that serve delicious and super cheap food.

The Nepal project is one of my favorites in the world.  Waking up to the view of the Himalayan mountains is a magical image. As it is located in a remote area and far from the country's tourist route, I was able to have a unique experience of getting to know the local culture up close. It is a project that usually receives volunteers from all over the world, which made the experience even more special, as there was an atmosphere of cooperation and friendship among the team. The work was guided by Shamser in a very attentive, responsible way and aimed at having a great impact on the lives of children in the community. I recommend it to everyone who wants to live a unique and unforgettable experience!
