Help preserve elephants in Thailand that come from mistreatment and unconscious tourism, supporting a project that has been carrying out important work for decades.

the social project

Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center located in Chiang Mai province, in northern Thailand. Founded in the 1990s by activist Lek Saengduean Chailert, ENP rescues elephants from mistreatment resulting from unconscious tourism and provides them with a home equipped to meet all their needs. Currently, the sanctuary also houses other animals such as: dogs, cats, horses, buffaloes, cows, pigs and goats.

It is important to highlight that many of the elephants suffered physical and psychological injuries, which gives them trauma in relation to humans. At ENP there are blind, crippled, orphaned and elderly animals who, despite their tragic past, are now free to live a peaceful life in a natural environment, where they are loved and respected.

Daily, the park's elephants can be seen grazing in the fields, bathing in the river, playing in the mud pits, socializing and caring for their young. And you can be part of it all!

activities & schedule

Volunteering at the sanctuary offers the opportunity to learn about the importance of animal conservation and the challenges of maintaining a place like ENP. Volunteers can help collect food from the elephants, as well as learn about the necessary care they require. During your free time, you can go for walks around the park, enjoy the company of other participants or meet the other animals that live there.

The volunteer must arrive in Chiang Mai the day before the program starts, on Sunday. On Monday, between 9am and 10am, the ENP team will pick up volunteers from their hotels to take them to one of the organization's offices where they will register. They will then be taken 60 km north, where the ENP is located, to then begin the program.

Breakfast is served at 7am, lunch at 12pm and dinner at 6pm. Every day, volunteers help prepare the animals' food, feed them and watch them bathe in the river. The main activities carried out are:

  • Harvesting, cleaning and preparing elephant food;

  • Park maintenance, including collecting animal feces, planting and building mud pits;

  • Support local communities and walks.

Departure takes place on the Sunday following arrival, i.e. 6 days later. The transport leaves ENP at around 2pm and you will be in the city around 3:30pm. If you have to leave early, just let us know so we can arrange your transportation.

Volunteering with the elephants was a transformative and surreal experience. Their intelligence and delicacy impressed me, beings so large and powerful, but full of sensitivity and grace. Knowing that my work contributed to their well-being was extremely rewarding. I recommend this experience to anyone who wants to go beyond tourism, immersing themselves in a journey of learning, deep connection and respect for wildlife.

ENP was my first international volunteering, in 2016. The experience with the elephants was indescribable, as was the interaction with the volunteers and the local team. I came back from this experience completely in love and, from there, my life changed completely.

This was my second volunteering with Karibu, a different experience from the first, as I was alone, but with all the support from Karibu! Doing this work with animals was something of immense value and learning for me as a human being. And meeting people with the same purpose and locals and being able to observe all the work that is done in the community for animals is beautiful and enriching!
